El Acebuchal: Cómpeta's Lost Village, and How to Get There

A short drive or a proper hike from Casa Freya near Cómpeta, in the Axarquía hills above Málaga, El Acebuchal is a lost village with a real story behind its cobbled streets.

In 1948, in the tense years after the Spanish Civil War, authorities evacuated the roughly 200 residents of El Acebuchal, suspecting the isolated hamlet in the Axarquía mountains of sheltering guerrilla fighters still resisting in the surrounding sierras. The village was abandoned and left to fall apart for the next fifty years, earning it the nickname the lost village.

That changed in 1998, when Antonio García Sánchez, a descendant of one of the original families, returned to rebuild his family's house. Others followed, and today El Acebuchal is a working village again: thirty six houses, a chapel, cobbled streets, and a single taverna serving home-cooked mountain food, from wild boar, kid and venison to a simple tomato, mozzarella and orange salad, alongside old photographs of the families who once lived there.

Getting there

On foot: a marked mountain trail connects El Acebuchal to Cómpeta, passing through pine forest and wild herbs, rosemary, thyme and oregano among them.

You can also park at La Fábrica, just outside Cómpeta, and walk in from there.

By car: reachable via Cómpeta on the A7207 (turning onto an unmade mountain track around the km 8 marker), or via the shorter, more popular route from Frigiliana, one of the prettiest white villages in the Axarquía, along the old Torrox-Cómpeta road.

While you're out that way, it's worth building in a stop at the Fábrica de la Luz, a short walk further on, where natural rock pools and clear mountain streams make a good place to cool off before heading back.
