La Herradura: A Beach Day Near Almunecar

La Herradura is a horseshoe-shaped bay on the coast near Almunecar, about 45 minutes from Casa Freya. It's a good option when you want a proper beach day without the crowds of the bigger resort towns further along the coast.
The bay is sheltered, which keeps the water calmer than most beaches on this stretch of coast, and makes it popular for swimming, paddleboarding and diving. There are a couple of diving schools based right on the seafront if you want to try a dive or take a course while you're here.
The promenade running along the sand has a good choice of chiringuitos, so lunch is easy to sort out right there. Almunecar itself is a short walk or drive around the headland, with its own old town and castle if you want to add a bit of sightseeing to the day.
It works well as a half day out, or a full one if you combine it with Almunecar. Parking along the front can fill up in peak summer, so arriving earlier in the day gives you the best pick of spots.
