Casa Freya sits right on the edge of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park, one of the largest protected areas in Andalusia and one of the best reasons to base yourself near Cómpeta. The hills above the village are laced with hiking trails through pine forest, olive groves and vineyards, and whatever your level, there's a route nearby to suit you.
Cómpeta to Canillas de Albaida loop
A moderate 8km walk connecting two of the Axarquía's white villages, Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida, with mountain views for most of the route. One of the more popular hiking routes near Cómpeta, and a good half-day option if you want a proper walk without giving up a full day.
Hawk Hill and Huerta Grande Pass loop
A gentler route past Cerro Gavilán (Hawk Hill) and the Huerta Grande pass, with some of the best viewpoints in the Sierra de Tejeda for the effort involved. A good choice for families or less experienced walkers.
For hikers after more of a challenge, the trails climb higher into the natural park:
Collado de Huerta Grande circular
A harder, roughly 3 hour route for confident, experienced hikers, climbing higher into the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park with more serious terrain underfoot.
Beyond the loops closest to Cómpeta, two more hikes in the Axarquía are worth the short drive:
The river walk from Canillas de Albaida to Árchez
Known locally as the Ruta de los Molinos, the route of the mills, this gentle walk follows the Río Turvilla between the villages of Canillas de Albaida and Árchez, passing the ruins of old water mills along the riverbed. An easy, mostly flat route, and a good choice for a shorter outing or a hike with kids.
El Saltillo, near Canillas de Aceituno
Sometimes called the Caminito del Rey of the Axarquía, this dramatic route follows a river gorge and crosses a hanging bridge above the water. More adventurous than the other hikes on this list, and worth building a full morning around.
Whatever the day calls for, a short stroll, a half-day loop, or something more ambitious, there's a hike near Cómpeta for everyone staying at Casa Freya, right in the heart of the Axarquía in Málaga province.
